once she refused to press the button
and so she stood by my side, waiting.
perhaps she did not know her mistake
but i did not know how to tell her
all she could ever want right there
sat on the far side past the traffic
only my own kill switch in arms reach
ready to finally give her tranquility.
perhaps my purpose isnt to help?
her name was so easy to scream
from the bottom of her boot taps
rhythmic, patient on the concrete
i always allowed people to cross
whenever they'd cared enough
to stop by me for one moment
but it must have been the way
she stood in such confidence
especially in embarrassment
that silenced every dilemma
hastily like i prayed for
so when she would glance
even just for a second
consider the button
that was the sign
to dedicate my
whole existence
all my time to
her attention
until finally
it was me
stood by
her side
waiting.
she may never even
press that button.
but for her,
i have turned green anyway.
